Starthrower Foundation is a volunteer-based Canadian registered charity that raises and distributes funds to young Haitian adults who wish to complete their education and/or apprenticeships so that they can move into the workforce and out of poverty.
To foster academic success, they also use financial donations to help students with housing, food, medical and dental services, when and as needed.
Starthrower Foundation also looks for opportunities to create jobs, which raise individual self-esteem through the dignity of work.
They are located in the north coast city of Cap-Haitien, Haiti.
It was founded in 2004 by Canadian Sharon Gaskell, who I had the pleasure of meeting a few times, not to mention our weekly correspondance regarding the stories in this webcomic. Sharon is one of the most courageous and inspiring person I’ve ever meet. She is a former teacher with 20 years experience, and a former youth minister. Sharon spends much of her time in Haiti directly administering and overseeing the various programs.
